 This player can be used standalone and use a WMP playlist or can be used to control other players like iTunes. To change how the media player works, right click one of the buttons like play and then choose player preferences. Right click the glass and click preferences to choose if the player is always on top or not and if the player autostarts.

 I was very suspicious about this new version of Windows Media Player. Based on the impression I have made upon the other versions, I was anxious to see if this version can really change something. From version 6 I couldn't see anything special to this player.
At the first glance the player seems very commercial oriented, much more than the other versions. WMP 11 is based on a strong collaboration with URGE matchbox service. From the installation phase you can choose to install this service or not. Its installation gives the player another face. You can choose from thousand of songs, artists, albums, genres or radio services, by subscribing to their service. You must pay from 14.95$ per month to 149$ per year for a full access which grants you transfer service to compatible portable devices (iriver clix, Creative ZEN Vision:M, Samsung Z5), access to playlists based on styles, TV shows, etc, music delivered direct from MTV, VH1, CMT and radio stations with high quality sound. Some of the radio stations are free, but most of them are asking for subscription at this service. Those times when you had access to free radio stations are almost gone.

[1] DVD decryption is done through the libdvdcss library.

[3] supported CPU extensions are MMX, MMXEXT, SSE and 3D Now! on x86 processors, and AltiVec on G4 processors.
[4] the OpenBSD 2.9 default assembler does not support MMX.
[5] VLC for GNU/Linux supports two kinds of MPEG-2 encoding cards: Hauppauge WinTV-PVR-250/350 and Visiontech Kfir.
[6] VLC on GNU/Linux, Solaris, and Microsoft Windows has playback control support via libcdio and libvcdinfo. On other platforms SVCD support varies depending on the availability of these libraries. (Volunteers for adding support is always welcome.). Handling still frames (often used in menus) and switching between different video formats is a problem.
[7] Full color for YUV-type chromas is not handled, only the gray-scale value. Subtitle transparency is not fully supported for all chromas. Some chromas are not handled at all.
[8] CDDB information provided by libcddb via libcdio. Support is available on those platforms both of these libraries are available. libcddb runs on BeOS although libcdio doesn't. On Microsoft Windows, libcddb doesn't compile yet using without POSIX emulation.

QuickTime Alternative will allow you to play QuickTime (.mov .qt) files. This way there is no need to install the offical QuickTime Player. It also supports QuickTime content that is embedded in webpages. The QuickTime plugins include iPIX and QuickTimeVR. The QuickTime Browser plugin supports Internet Explorer, Opera, Mozilla and Netscape. The QuickTime plugins include iPIX and QuickTimeVR. As a bonus, Internet Explorer will play all QuickTime movies that are embedded in a webpage. You do need a media player that is capable of playing QuickTime files.
** Features:
- Media Player Classic [version 6.4.8.9]: this is a full-featured player which has internal decoding support for DVD, MPEG-2, MP3, MP2, AAC, AC3 and DTS. It also has internal support for opening Matroska and Ogg containers. Media Player Classic is also capable of playing QuickTime and RealMedia content if those codecs are installed.
- QuickTime Codecs [version 7.0.4.80]: required for playing QuickTime content.
- QuickTime DirectShow filter: allows you to play QuickTime content in all DirectShow enabled players.
Without this filter QuickTime content can only be played in Media Player Classic.

 Real Alternative will allow you to play RealMedia files without having to install the official RealPlayer. You do need a media player that is capable of playing RealMedia files. The included Media Player Classic supports it. Supported are RealAudio (.ra .rpm), RealVideo (.rm .ram .rmvb), RealText (.rt), and ReadPix (.rp). Not fully supported are: Streaming smil files (.smi .smil) and Realmedia embedded in webpages. The RealMedia Browser plugin supports Internet Explorer, Opera, Netscape and Mozilla.
